The Countdown to Surgery

I am just under 2 weeks out from my big surgery. I have been stockpiling heavy items since I won't be able to lift anything over 5lbs for 2 months. I thought a 10lb limitation last summer was bad, 5lbs is worse. HUGE THANKS for all the care packages sent my way.

Looking at my handouts or instructions for the surgery I am checking off stuff. I had my EKG, it shows the usual RBBB and LAFB, no changes, no worse, no better so I am ok. I have an appointment for bloodwork right before I leave town for Fargo on the 2nd. I picked up my prescription for antibiotics that I will take the night before at 7pm and 11pm. I have my pre-surgery shake to drink at 3am.

I am to go on a low fiber diet a few days before. I have looked at specific requirements of it and have made my "meal plan" for the 4 days leading up to surgery. When you are limited to 1 cup of vegetables, 1 cup of canned pears or peaches, 1/2 cup white rice and 8oz of meat(poultry/fish) per day, yes, PER DAY you really notice how big servings are. One can of green beans and one can of pears will last me 2 days. My appetite hasn't been great lately, but I know this is going to be a bit tough.

The day before I am on clear liquids only. I will be drinking soda, tea, Bouillion, Gatorade and clear juice. Then at 6pm I have a 32oz Gatorade (no red or purple) mixed with MiraLAX to drink. I know it is all so my stomach and intestines will be clear for surgery. It is sure to cause good laughs with my brother Mike, (driver, caregiver, support system) on the drive there. He already told me he is going to eat a chicken sandwich on the drive, while I drink broth. (Note to self, do not post rest room selfies from I94)

I know the surgery will really mess up my digestive system for a while, so I am going to enjoy favorite foods in the week leading up to my low fiber diet. Steak, shrimp, Indian Taco, cheeseburgers, pasta and a glass of wine or 2.

I have to update my Advance Care Plan; in the event something goes horribly wrong. Mike and I talked about it on our way home from the first appointment. It really is something everyone should have an idea about. I am having major surgery, but no one knows when their time will come. Deadly disease, car accident, major heart attack, or freak accident could take anyone of us at any time.

I have also prepped my bag with comfy loose clothes for the return home and necessities while I am in the hospital. I have some magazines; word finds and a book to occupy my time. The Olympics will be on, so that will help. I am taking one of my own blankets too. Those hospital blankets are more like a flannel sheet, not much warmth, so I will have one of mine with me.

I am no longer looking up HIPEC or Peritoneal Carcinomatosis, instead I am looking at what helps scars. What lotions or vitamins help with healing.

I thank God for all the blessings and lessons in my life and thank him for giving me strength.
